Champion, 2007 ADCC 3rd place finisher (Abu Dhabi Combat Club is a sanctioning body that hosts a world grappling tournament held every year) and the 2000 Remix (open weight) World Champion. Not to mention, the current women’s 135-lb Strikeforce Champion. Marloes is a world class fighter at the top of her game. Her opponent, Miesha Tate is also a talented fighter. She was the 135-lb Strikeforce Women’s Tournament Champion and has held titles at various other MMA organizations as well as a Washington state women’s wrestling title.
This has the potential to be a hell of a ground fight. Coenen is a superb BJJ practitioner (watch her flying armbar that defeated 215-lb Becky Levi at the Remix World Championship) and Tate possesses some serious wrestling talent. The one advantage that I can see would be Coenen’s kickboxing. The Dutch have traditionally excelled at kickboxing and she is teammates with fellow Dutchman and Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, who is a top notch striker. Also, Tate needs to have her wrestling SHARP to compete with the BJJ of Coenen. I know all you wrestlers out there are calling me crazy, but a high level BJJ fighter such as Coenen is just that dominate. All said though this title fight definitely adds to the entertainment factor of Saturdays event. It is after all a co-main event.
